This sphere weighs in at a massive 97 kilos, with a diameter of 41 inches.
The block of Lapis that the sphere was created from was excavated from the Sar-e-Sang mine in Afghanistan and weighed 317 kilos. Too big to be transported from the region by pack-horse, as is usual, the stone was smuggled out through the Khyber Pass in a lorry, hidden under fruit in a tortuous X mile journey to the workshops of gem-cutters in India. Shaping and polishing the stone took hundreds of hours and the skills of two craftsmen over a three month period.
This is a truly unique object and it's highly unlikely that something of this size will ever be attempted again. It has remarkable presence, and is an interior deisgner's dream, an ideal focus piece for a large hotel. The price reflects the rarity of the object, but we still believe it to be a snip.
